The Power of Presence: Mindfulness Technique for Lasting Relationships

The phrase "being fully engaged in the present moment without judgement" seems simple on the surface, but it can actually be one of the most challenging states to achieve. Many of us enter our interactions with a myriad of judgements and convictions. A significant factor that influences how we connect with others is how we are feeling.

  • Mood: When we are stressed, tired, sick or anxious, those feelings inevitably seep into or even saturate our mood.

  • Stacked Resentments: When we have a bunch of resentments stacking up, those feelings destroy passion. Not ideal for a lasting relationship.

  • Depressed: Similarly, if we are experiencing sadness, despair or overwhelm, those feelings profoundly impact our relationships.

The most crucial mindfulness technique we can focus on is managing our emotional state with alert presence. Our mood is shaped by various factors, and while it would be possible to list 100 influences on our mood, one of the most powerful tools at our disposal is our ability to practice mindfulness. My favourite mindfulness technique is 'the feather' technique. More about this technique in my next blog post. By choosing a mindfulness technique, we can gain control over our thoughts and how they influence our emotions. This means we have the power to uplift our spirits and navigate challenges more effectively, ultimately enhancing our connections with others.

Daily Check-ins: Regularly express appreciation for your partner, focusing on specific qualities or actions. One of the ways I encourage mindful presence back into a strained relationship is to express two appreciations, one about yourself and one about your partner every single night. This is a genius way to build self reflection, improve connection and cut through the negativity of taking each other for granted. Set a timer every evening at a time of your choice and make time for gratitude - I promise, you will reap an abundance of rewards.

There are a variety of other mindful activities that promote presence, such as monthly date nights, cooking together, nature walks, cycle ride, mindful touch, keeping a happiness jar of special moments and using mindful communication.

As we have explored, cultivating mindfulness is a powerful tool for enhancing all your relationships and emotional well-being. If you are wanting to take the next step in your journey towards deeper connection and presence, I invite you to reach out!
